NPFL to honour late Henry Nwosu on Matchday 30
Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, has directed that 60 seconds silence be observed before kickoff at all NPFL Matchday 30 games this weekend in honour of late Henry Nwosu. The NPFL boss would describe the death of Ex Green Eagles captain, Nwosu, as a personal loss to him and a general loss to the club football family in the country. Nwosu, the youngest member of the national team that won Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations in 1980, reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday, March 14 at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). Elegbeleye described the late Nwosu as “a personal friend whom i have maintained communication with right from my time at the National Sports Commission.” When Elegbeleye was nominated for the Pitch Football Awards, Nwosu was one of the prominent voices that endorsed the NPFL Chairman, seizing the opportunity to narrate the personal relationship they shared. In a condolence message, the NPFL Chairman described the news of the passing as “the death of a true ambassador of the domestic and national team football because he not only made his mark as a player in league clubs, he also coached some of the league clubs”. On a philosophical note, the NPFL Chief said that death is a human submission to the will of God, and prayed for the repose of his soul and strength for the immediate family to endure through the agonising period of losing a loved one. Nwosu was a famed schoolboy football player who later featured for some of the dominant football clubs of the 1980s, including the defunct New Nigeria Bank and African Continental Bank.

Kwara Utd relocates to Mobolaji Johnson Arena for NPFL home matches
Responding to a request from Kwara United, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has approved the relocation of the club’s home matches from the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena at Onikan, Lagos.Kwara United are serving an indefinite stadium ban which will see them play their home games for the rest of the season outside Ilorin. This followed unacceptable fans behaviour during their rescheduled Matchday 23 fixture against Rivers United.The club cited the need for sporting fairness, noting that another Ogun State based club, Remo Stars are in the same struggle to avoid relegation. They said rival fans may trigger some crisis that could be blamed on Kwara United as the host club.They have adopted the stadium at Onikan as their home ground. The choice has been approved by the NPFL through a letter signed by the Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi.The club start their life in the new ground with a Matchday 30 clash with Rangers International on Sunday, March 15.

Oweilayefa’s hat-trick sinks Ikorodu City, Rangers go top
Bendel Insurance striker Alex Oweilayefa put up a show in one of Sunday’s matches in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as he scored three times in his club’s 4-0 thumping of Ikorodu City. Oweilayefa and his teammates were quicker off the blocks against Ikorodu City who are in the race for the title. The quick start paid off for Kennedy Boboye’s men as Oweilayefa put them ahead on 15 minutes. Nine minutes later, Wisdom Udom doubled the lead before Oweilayefa scored his second of the game in the 27th minute to make any sort of comeback impossible for Ikorodu City. Oweilayefa sealed an impressive afternoon with his third just a minute before the hour mark to condemn Ikorodu City to their heaviest defeat of the season. The last time Ikorodu City conceded four goals in match was earlier in the season when they lost 2-4 at Niger Tornadoes in September 2025. Former champions, Rangers International, benefited from the slips of other title contenders especially Ikorodu City and Rivers United to go top of the pile. The Flying Antelopes made sure they secured the full points against Nasarawa United at their Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium home in Enugu through goals from Godwin Obaje (18′) and Chidiebere Nwobodo (26′). Rangers are now one point ahead of Rivers United who have 46 points and three outstanding matches. Rivers United suffered a one-nil defeat at South-south rivals, Bayelsa United. Temple Emekayi unfortunately turned the ball into his own net on 13 minutes as Bayelsa United did the double over Rivers United. The champions Remo Stars got only their second win since the start of 2026 as Haruna Hadi’s brace on 60 and 62 minutes ensured their new head coach, Usman Abd’Allah began his reign with a win. But the titleholders still remain in the bottom-four. Sodiq Ibrahim and Qamar Adegoke fired Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) to a two-goal lead against Kano Pillars at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan before Mustapha Jibrin scored a late goal in the 79th minute for Pillars. The crucial encounter was played at the MKO Abiola Stadium, where the Harmony Boys delivered a dominant performance from start to finish. Kwara United controlled proceedings early, with Shola Abdulraheem and Akeem Akanni anchoring the midfield effectively, while Kabir Mohammed and Afeez Musa — both returned after a few matches out — dazzled fans with solid displays at the back. NPFL mourns the demise of El-Kanemi Warriors chairman
Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, has described as a huge loss to club football in the country, the shocking news of the death of the Chairman of El-Kanemi Warriors FC, Alhaji Ibrahim Mainu Mustapha. In his expression of condolence to the club, Elegbeleye said the late club chairman was one who supported initiatives of the NPFL Board in mobilising fans to their home matches and upheld fair play and violence-free matchdays in Maiduguri. ”Late Alhaji Maina Mustapha was a peaceful person who did his best to ensure the success of his club in particular and the NPFL in general,” ”We are deeply saddened by this loss of a very supportive member of the clubs chairmen’s association,” noted Elegbeleye. He prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and comfort from Allah for the family he left behind, the club and Borno State. El-Kanemi Warriors announced the passing of the Chairman on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 24, at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after a protracted illness.
