Abia Warriors FC based in Umuahia, Abia State was first licensed to play in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in August 2013, ten years after the club was founded in 2003.
Abia Warriors FC started off as an amateur side in Umuahia known as NEPA FC, a recreational arm of the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA). The club’s historical account pays tribute to Late Basil Udeogu who took charge of the club, renamed it Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia and steered the club from the amateur league to the then Nigeria Professional League. Following the death of Udeogu and the clubs admission to the NPFL, the Abia State Government elected to sponsor the club side and thereafter appointed Chief Jude Ezechukwu, proprietor of the defunct Jasper United Football Club, as its first Chairman. Along its campaign in various cadres of the national league, the club was renamed OUK Football Club in honour of a Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu who made the decision for the state to sponsor the club. It would revert to Abia Warriors in 2010. Since joining the NPFL, Abia Warriors may not have won any national honours, but it has proven not to be a pushover especially in the league competitions where it posted an impressive three games on the road in the first campaign of the top flight.
A relatively young club, Abia Warriors has been known to select players from the grassroots and nurturing them to prominence for which the poster boy is Chisom Chikatara, now playing in the Jordanian league. Another protégé of the club was Nigeria Olympic team defender, Kingsley Chima Uluocha. There is also Ndifreke Effiong who started from the junior team, Abia Comets in 2015/16 and promoted to the senior team the next season where he played until transferring to Akwa United. While at Abia Warriors, he was enlisted to the country’s Olympic qualifying team and later played for the Super Eagles against Egypt.
A member of the fast growing Oriental Derby rivalry between the Southeast state based clubs, Abia Warrior has posted stunning results including securing a double in consecutive seasons over Heartland and shocking wins in Aba against Enyimba, and in Enugu against Rangers Abia Warriors have since it parted ways with its first coach at the senior level, Isa Ladan Bosso, worked with a number of other rated Coaches including Brazilian, Rafael Everton, Kennedy Boboye who would later join Plateau United to win the league and another league winner with both Kano Pillars and Enyimba, Okey Emodi. It has also enjoyed the services of young coaches like Abdullahi Biffo, Henry Makinwa and their current Coach, Imama Amapakabor who won the league for Rangers after 30 years.
