A football minded Military Administrator of Katsina State, Colonel Abdulmuminu Aminu, now retired in 1995, is credited with the formation of a club for the state and aptly named Katsina United. Aminu would later earn appointment into the board of the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA) as chairman during the period association football in the country was not democratized.

Katsina United began participation in organized national football leagues from the fourth tier and progressed to the second tier by successive promotions. It won promotion to the top flight in 1997 after becoming champions of the second-tier league but would in 2001 be disbanded after relegation from the top flight.

In 2009, the team was revived and renamed Katsina Spotlight Football Club but that didn’t last long as the name reverted to Katsina United in 2015/16 season when it gained promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and is now into its straight fifth year in the top echelon of the Nigeria league.

Katsina United haven’t won a major title since it was returned to the NPFL in 2015 but they have one of the most enviable records as regards promotion in the lower leagues. Some of the lower league laurels include emerging champions of the Super 6 Play-off in 2016, PRO League 2nd, 3rd and 4th divisions Champions in 1997, 1996 and 1995.

Performances in CAF competition include an African Cup Winners’ Cup appearance in 1996 reaching the quarter finals and another CAF Cup appearance in 2001

Katsina United was at early period of its formation, the preferred destination of some of the country’s best players and coaches despite playing at the lower divisions of the league then. It lured the big players with fantastic financial packages and most of them would go on to make a name in Nigeria and abroad.

Some of these players include; Kelechi Okoye, Late Pius Daniel, Friday Ekpo, Barnabas Emenger, Emmanuel Isah, Bashir Sadaiki, and Olumide Harrison. Others are Ahmed Jubrin, Lemmy Isah, Kayode Julius, Andrew Akhumogbe, and Dele Tom-Dollar amongst others.

Katsina United play their home games at the 35,000-seat Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Karkanda, Katsina State. The All-sitting arena was opened for use to the team in the 2017 season.
